Heartwood is pleased to announce the Bloomington premiere of COAL COUNTRY, the award-winning new documentary by film-makers Mari-Lynn Evans and Phylis Geller, documenting the courageous and inspiring stories of the people living in Appalachian communities affected by mountaintop removal coal-mining and the entire cycle of coal power. Mountaintop Removal is a type of coal mining in which enormous quantities of explosives are used to blast the tops off of mountains to expose thin seams of coal. The resulting toxic rubble is pushed into adjacent valleys, burying rivers and streams and poisoning local communities.
This screening will also feature the national CD release party for the companion musical compilation CD, Coal Country Music, with live performances by artists included on the CD, as well as food and beverages provided by local businesses. Coal Country Music includes tracks donated by Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Ralph Stanley, Kathy Mattea, Justin Townes Earle, Natalie Merchant, Gillian Welch and Diana Jones, and is dedicated to ending the tragedy of mountaintop removal coal mining -- all net proceeds from CD sales will benefit the Alliance for Appalachia.
