Celebrate a time gone by, when watching musicals,
romance, and comedy at the local movie palace was all the rage!
With average attendances at more than one hundred people for
each movie, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater is excited to announce a
summer schedule of classic films you won’t see anywhere else.
Appropriate for school age children, engaging for adults, and
reminiscent of the glory days of the movie palace, the Golden
Age of Hollywood series is the perfect Tuesday afternoon lunch
date! Presented in collaboration with the IU Department of
Communication and Culture, and Bloomington Parks and Recreation,
these movie gems are introduced by IU Associate Professor Chris
Anderson, who shares with our audiences interesting anecdotes
and background on each film.
This series is made possible
through the generous sponsorship of Indiana
University. Through a new partnership between the Indiana
University Office of the Provost, Moveable Feast of the Arts
Program, and Bloomington’s Buskirk-Chumley Theater, movie buffs
can step back in time and enjoy another year of classic films.
Created through the generous
support of the Lilly Endowment, Inc., the Moveable Feast of the
Arts Program was first initiated in 2004 to extend IU’s cultural
performances across the state. “Bloomington benefits from the
creative efforts of university faculty, and a local series such
as the Golden Age of Hollywood is the sort of partnership
between the university and community that has enduring effects,”
said Michael McRobbie, Interim Provost and Vice President for
Academic Affairs on the Bloomington campus.

This is our second-annual, end-of-summer, Technicolor
pirate movie, and we’re delighted to continue the
tradition! Fresh off his success in The Mark of Zorro,
Tyrone Power again displayed his sword-fighting skill as a
hot-tempered buccaneer who sails the Caribbean, plundering
colonial villages and stealing riches bound for the
Spanish king. He meets his match in the beautiful Maureen
O’Hara, but will love convince him to give up the pirate’s
life? Cinematographer Leon Shamroy won an Oscar for his
majestic Technicolor photography. One of the best pirate
movies ever made, The Black Swan is full of
swashbuckling action heroes, saber-rattling swordfights,
and plenty of derring-do on the high seas – the perfect
escape on a hot summer day.
This series is
made possible through a
new partnership between the Indiana University Office of
the Provost, Moveable Feast of the Arts Program, and
the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.
The
Buskirk-Chumley Theater is a 600
seat, historic theater located at 114 E. Kirkwood in
downtown Bloomington. Beautifully restored by the
Bloomington Area Arts Council, the theater is currently
managed by a private non-profit organization,
BCT Management, Inc.
The theater is a valued community resource, available for
public or private events.
