Community Kitchen invites you to the 2008 Bloomington Chefs’ Challenge, the premier Bloomington “Foodie” event. Last year’s inaugural event raised over $6,000 to help feed the hungry in our community.  Each day Community Kitchen staff and volunteers face the challenge of putting together a nutritious meal for over 200 people using collected and donated food items.  We created an event that pays tribute to this effort while highlighting the talent of local chefs in a friendly competition.  Based on television’s popular Iron Chef, this culinary event will feature 3 local chefs who will have one hour to cook a winning dish from a pantry of ingredients.  A “mystery ingredient” will be revealed right before competition begins.  Bloomington Community Access Televisions film crews will show close-ups of the fast paced live action on the Buskirk’s big screen.  Emcees (Rhino’s, Brad Wilhelm & Bloomingfoods, David Coonce) will update the audience as the competition heats up and then 3 celebrity judges will pick the top dish.  Audience members will have the opportunity to sample signature appetizers from over 10 local chefs, raffle to win an opportunity to sit on the judge’s bench and sample the chefs creations and participate in a live auction of culinary goods.

The 20^th Anniversary of Night At The Opera on behalf of Middle Way House!  Love, Laughter and Song from opera to musical theater will abound during this extraordinary evening of music, in an event that provides much needed funds for MWH’s shelter, support services and vital crisis intervention work.

Two-time Grammy Award winning artist Sylvia McNair and internationally renowned baritone Timothy Noble will be performing. The mellifluous George Walker of WFIU returns as Host for the evening and Peter Jacobi will again provide his inimitable commentary as Master of Ceremonies.  Lisa Williamson, who has been passionate in her efforts to further the work of MWH, will serve as producer and performer.

Sumptuous hors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:15 PM and the concert will begin at 6:00 PM, with dinner to follow the performance at Michael’s Uptown Cafe.

Celebrate a time gone by, when watching musicals, romance, and comedy at the local movie palace was all the rage! Share gems of the Golden Age of Hollywood with your friends and families in the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Popular MGM co-stars William Powell and Myrna Loy put The Thin Man series on hold for this equally zestful screwball comedy. Clocked by an oar while on a vacation cruise, fusty small-town businessman Powell suddenly remembers he's a conman suffering from amnesia, and not the model citizen he's been playing for eight years. No one in town has any knowledge of Powell's criminal past, and he recalls nothing of the “lost” years – not even his bitter marriage to beautiful but bored Loy. With the rediscovery of his larcenous instincts, Powell hatches a plot to liquidate his bank accounts and swindle the unsuspecting townsfolk before making his escape. There’s only one small hitch in the plan: he’s falling in love with his wife. 

Appropriate for school age children, engaging for adults, and reminiscent of the glory days of the movie palace, the Golden Age of Hollywood series is the perfect Tuesday afternoon lunch date! Presented in collaboration with the IU Department of Communication and Culture, and Bloomington Parks and Recreation, these movie gems are introduced by IU Associate Professor Chris Anderson, who shares with our audiences interesting anecdotes and background on each film.

Through a new partnership between the Indiana University Office of the Provost, Moveable Feast of the Arts Program, and Bloomington’s Buskirk-Chumley Theater, movie buffs can step back in time and enjoy another year of classic films.
