The BCT Concert Series is pleased
to present Andrew Bird. A classically trained
violinist, former swing jazz musician and now art rock
sensation, Bird is one of the most imaginative and unique
voices in music today. Essentially a one-man band, he
gives incredible live performances. His music is an
eclectic mix of gypsy ballads, jazz, folk and rock. "Every
night," Bird says, "I am rewriting all my songs for the
audience."
Originally from Chicago, Bird learned violin from a young
age using the traditional Suzuki method. He graduated from
Northwestern University with a degree in violin
performance.
Bird spent his formative years soaking up classical
repertoire completely by ear, so when it came time for a
restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian Gypsy
music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it
wasn't such a giant leap. It's fitting that now, though
classically trained, he has instead opted to play his
violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying
himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and
whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter
in the process.
Though Andrew's voice has been compared to such eminent
company as Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, and Rufus Wainwright,
like those performers, it has a quality all its own. He
also adds to the mix his unnatural whistling ability,
rendering him capable of adding organically generated yet
otherworldly, Theremin-like sounds to the mix.
"A quiet, yet insistent, buzz has
been building around multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird
since the release of 2005’s brilliant The Mysterious
Production of Eggs. Armchair Apocrypha betters that album,
with an understated pop nous atop lush instrumental
backing, featuring anything from archly-plucked strings to
glockenspiels and what sounds like a bowed saw. A unique
talent." - Music Week, March 2007.
Le Loup
creates music heavily laden with intricate patterns and
swells, edging towards dramatic, sweeping movements.
Everybody in the live band sings, and all instruments work
together to weave an overall sonic tapestry; some voices
surface and shine occasionally and briefly, but ultimately
sink back into the larger schemes of the songs; thus, each
voice supports the other, and each player is vital.
Andrew Bird and LeLoup
are
presented by the BCT Concert Series and Union
Board.
